What Is Ozone Therapy?
Ozone is a naturally occurring, highly active form of oxygen. In therapeutic doses, ozone interacts with tissues to support immune modulation, enhance oxygen utilization at the cellular level, promote antioxidant response pathways, support circulation and tissue repair, and create an unfavorable environment for pathogens.
Ozone therapy is best understood through the lens of hormesis; a biological principle in which a low, controlled dose of a stressor triggers beneficial adaptive responses, while higher or uncontrolled doses may be harmful. Examples of other hormetic therapies include: exercise, dietary fasting, sauna therapy AKA heat exposure, cold therapy AKA cryotherapy, and hypoxic training (intermittent hypoxia using adaptive contrast oxygen therapy)
Ozone therapy has been used internationally for decades and is increasingly sought for its complementary role in integrative and functional medicine care. As of 2017, ozone therapy is approved in twelve countries around the world and approved in Europe. Ozone therapy is not FDA approved, however thousands of doctors and practitioners in the USA continue to use ozone therapy despite the statements made by the FDA. A number of organizations have emerged to represent these doctors, the primary organization being the American Academy of Ozone Therapy (AAOT).

Why Ozone Insufflation Therapies?
Insufflation involves introducing ozone gas into specific body cavities, allowing it to be absorbed through mucosal tissues for localized and systemic effects. Ozone therapy can be delivered through multiple routes, each with unique advantages. While intravenous (IV) ozone therapies can be appropriate in certain clinical situations, ozone insufflation, particularly rectal insufflation, offers many of the same systemic benefits with fewer barriers for patients who require regular or long-term care.
Rectal ozone insufflation allows ozone to be absorbed through the richly vascularized mucosal lining of the colon. From there, ozone-generated signaling molecules (such as ozonides and peroxides) enter systemic circulation and initiate many of the same adaptive, hormetic responses associated with IV ozone therapy. One of the most notable advantages of insufflation therapy is its gentler physiological impact. Compared with IV ozone, ozone insufflation’s oxidative stimulus is more gradual, its peak oxidative load is lower, and the body has more time to adapt. This makes ozone insufflation particularly well-suited for sensitive individuals, patients with chronic inflammatory or immune dysregulation, patients concerned about vein irritation or vein collapse, and those new to ozone therapy.

What Ozone Insufflation Therapy is Best?
1. Rectal insufflation is one of the most widely used ozone delivery methods due to its excellent absorption and systemic reach. This method is non-invasive, well-tolerated, and often used when systemic ozone exposure is desired without IV therapy. Common reasons patients choose rectal insufflation include: immune system support, gut and microbiome support, inflammation modulation, detoxification support, and adjunctive support for chronic or complex health concerns.
2. Vaginal insufflation delivers ozone directly to vaginal tissues and surrounding structures. Common reasons patients choose vaginal insufflation include: vaginal and pelvic health, local microbial balance, tissue healing and circulation, post-antibiotic or recurrent imbalance support, HPV, candida overgrowth, and STD’s.
3. Ear Insufflation delivers ozone through specialized ear pieces designed to safely vent excess pressure. Common reasons patients choose ear insufflation include: ear and sinus health, circulation to head and neck tissues, and immune response in the upper respiratory region.
3. Ozone Injection delivers ozone gas into specific tissues or spaces via injection. Injection protocols are individualized and performed only after a thorough clinical evaluation. Common reasons patients choose injection therapy include: joint and musculoskeletal health, local inflammation modulation, tissue repair, and pain management support.
