Heart Rate Variability

Understanding your pandora box in order to regain control of your life

Understand How to Respond to Stress in a Healthier Way

Are you ready to learn how to self-regulate? Heart Rate Variability (HRV) measures the variation in time between each heartbeat. This variation is controlled by our autonomic nervous system (ANS). Our ANS influences our entire body, works behind the scenes, and runs off of experience & information we have hardwired into our body over our lifetime. HRV measurements help create more awareness of how we live, think, and how our behavior affects our nervous system and bodily functions. Low HRV by itself can not diagnose what a person is suffering from, however it is a beneficial predictor of all cause mortality.

Our goal is to help you understand the concept of heart coherence, it’s affect on HRV, and how it relates to resilience and performance.

Key Concepts:

  • Coherence is an optimal state of HRV functioning.

  • Coherence is the key to building your resilience capacity.

  • The more coherence you build and maintain, the more energy you build and store in your energy reservoir. You can create a new baseline of resilience, you just have to try and be consistent.

  • Renewing emotions create the measurable state of coherence which can be tracked on HRV tracking devices. Although the gold standard is to analyze HRV is via the long strip of an electrocardiogram, most activity tracking devices can track HRV data. Garmin, Polar, Fitbit, Oura Ring and the Whoop Band all provide this data within the software of their activity tracking devices. HeartMath Inner Balance software can help you specifically build and track coherence during deliberate heart refocusing and heart restructuring practices.

  • Negative emotions are costly and inefficient and deplete your resilience capacity. One of the clinicians at TBHW often mentions how expensive stress is to get off the body. They aren’t incorrect. Health spending per person in the U.S. was $10,966 in 2019, which was 42% higher than Switzerland, the country with the next highest per capita health spending. This is insane, and most of it is related to stress or stress induced behaviors like alcoholism, obesity due to over eating and other harmful numbing practices.
