Diet and Lifestyle - How it Affects Aging and Cell Senescence

Dr. Dawn Molina joined Gayle Guyardo of WFLA News Tampa on November 9th, 2022 to discuss diet & lifestyle and how it may affects aging by causing accelerated cell senescence.

What is Cell Cell Senescence: The terms aging and cell senescence cannot be used interchangeably. Aging is a progressive decline with time whereas cell senescence occurs throughout lifespan. Therefore, cell senescence can occur at any stage of life regardless of age. The biological role of senescence is complex as both protective and deleterious effects of senescent cells can occur, we will discuss when cell senescence negatively impacts the body.

Lifestyle’s Impact on Cell Senescence: The onset of cell senescence may contribute to many age-associated pathologies, including cancer, tissue degeneration, and inflammatory diseases. Cell senescence by definition is the process of cellular aging. In biology, senescence is a process by which a cell ages and permanently stops dividing but does not die (as in apoptosis). Over time, large numbers of old (or senescent) cells can build up in tissues throughout the body. These cells remain active and can release harmful substances that may cause inflammation and damage to nearby healthy cells. Metabolic disorders like Type-2 Diabetes, Obesity, Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease, Cardiovascular Diseases, and others can accelerate the aging process by promoting a premature induction of the senescent state of the cells. In contrast, appropriate caloric restriction like intermittent fasting, without malnutrition is currently the most effective non-genetic intervention to delay cellular aging, and it has potential in decreasing the cellular senescent burden on our body.

Conclusion: Over consumption of innutritious food can promote cell senescence and therefore can speed up the aging process. Ways to avoid this: Don’t over eat, eat mostly nutritious whole foods rich in micronutrients, try time restricted eating or intermittent fasting, reduce and eliminate toxic substances like unnecessary medication or alcohol that may over-tax the liver, drink high quality substances like mineral water and electrolytes, engage in both cardiovascular and skeletal-muscular strengthening activities, consider supplementation that bolsters immunity and reduces oxidative stress, hot/cold therapy, and of course rest and recover.
